If you own an older home in the Cleveland area, there's a good chance your walls are made of plaster. Many homes built before the 1950s were constructed with plaster walls, and while they were the standard of their time, they come with their own set of challenges as they age.
At R&L Drywall, we work with plaster walls regularly throughout the greater Cleveland area. One of the most common questions we hear from homeowners is simple — should I repair my plaster or just replace it with drywall?
Here's everything you need to know.
What Are Plaster Walls?
Plaster walls were the standard wall finish in American homes for centuries. They were made by applying multiple layers of a wet plaster mixture over a wood or metal framework called lath. Once dried, plaster walls are extremely hard and durable — which is why so many of them are still standing today.
However, plaster is no longer used in new construction. Modern homes are built with drywall, which is faster to install, easier to repair, and more cost effective.
Common Problems With Plaster Walls
As plaster ages it becomes brittle and is prone to a number of issues:
- Cracks — hairline cracks are very common and often caused by the natural settling of a home over time
- Bulging or loose plaster — over time plaster can separate from the lath behind it, causing sections to bulge or feel hollow when tapped
- Large holes — damage from renovations, plumbing or electrical work can leave significant holes in plaster walls
- Water damage — leaks from above can cause plaster to soften, crumble or fall away entirely
When to Repair Your Plaster
Not every plaster problem requires a full replacement. In many cases, a skilled repair is the smarter and more cost effective choice. Plaster repair makes sense when:
- The damage is isolated to a small area
- The surrounding plaster is still solid and well attached
- You want to preserve the original character of your home
- The wall hasn't suffered significant water damage
R&L Drywall specializes in plaster crack repairs, patching loose or bulging sections, and restoring damaged ceilings and walls to a smooth, paint-ready finish.
When to Replace Plaster With Drywall
In some cases, replacement with drywall is the better long term solution. Consider replacing when:
- Large sections of plaster are loose or falling away
- The wall has suffered significant water damage
- You're already doing a major renovation in that area
- The plaster is so old and brittle that repairs would be temporary fixes at best
When plaster is replaced, drywall is always the modern choice. It's faster to install, easier to work with, and provides a clean smooth finish that's ready for paint.
